Is PRP at ALGM Right for You?
Five questions we get asked most before a first PRP visit.
What concern is PRP actually the right tool for?
PRP works best for three things: early to moderate hair thinning, dull or uneven facial skin (texture, fine lines, glow), and under-eye area dark circles or hollows that come from skin quality, not deep volume loss. It is less effective for deep wrinkles that need filler, or jowls that need RF tightening. We tell you in the consult whether PRP is the right call for your specific concern, or whether another treatment fits better.
How does PRP combine with microneedling? Is it worth the extra cost?
PRP with microneedling is one of our most-requested combos because the channels created by microneedling let PRP penetrate deeper, which amplifies the skin response. The result is typically better texture and glow than either treatment alone, with the same downtime as standalone microneedling. Worth the extra cost? For pore size, fine lines, and skin glow, yes. For pure pore size on younger skin, standalone microneedling is often enough. Lily walks through the comparison in the consult.
I am losing hair. Can PRP actually grow it back?
For early to moderate hair thinning (where follicles are still present but weakening), PRP scalp injections can slow loss and trigger regrowth over a 3 to 6 month series. The honest version: PRP is not a transplant. Once a follicle is fully gone, PRP cannot bring it back. We assess scalp density in the consult and tell you whether PRP is realistic for your situation or whether you should be looking at hair transplant options instead.
Does PRP hurt? What is the actual procedure like?
Most patients describe PRP scalp injections as a series of brief pinches over 10 to 15 minutes. Facial PRP is even gentler with topical numbing. The full visit takes 45 to 75 minutes including the blood draw and the time the centrifuge needs to separate platelets from your blood. There is minimal downtime: most patients go back to work the same day. Mild redness or tenderness at injection sites fades within hours.
How many sessions will I need and how is pricing structured?
For hair, plan three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, then maintenance every 6 to 12 months. For face, two to three sessions spaced four weeks apart, then maintenance. Pricing is per session and varies by treatment type (hair vs face vs combined with microneedling). We give you the per-session price and a realistic plan in the consult. CareCredit financing is available for treatment packages.
What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?
Blood is made up of liquid plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Plasma helps circulate other blood components, while platelets assist with blood clotting and contain growth factors that promote healing and tissue repair.
In PRP therapy, platelets are collected from the patient, concentrated, and then injected into targeted areas, such as joints, tendons, muscles, the face, or the scalp.
What Are the Different Types of PRP Injections?
There are four types of PRP injections, each used to address various conditions and injuries:
Hair restoration
Hair restoration PRP helps people grow their hair back. It is used for those who are losing hair or want thicker hair.
PRP for facial rejuvenation
Facial rejuvenation PRP makes the skin on the face look younger. It helps reduce wrinkles and gives the skin a nice glow.
Under-eye PRP
Under-eye PRP focuses on the area below the eyes. It helps reduce dark circles and puffiness.
Topical PRP combined with microneedling
Topical PRP combined with microneedling uses tiny needles to create small holes in the skin. This helps the PRP get into the skin better and can improve skin texture.
When Might You Consider PRP Treatment?
PRP is also effective for skin issues such as:
-
Age spots
-
Uneven complexion
-
Wrinkles or acne scars
-
Sagging skin
- Transplanted hair growth and baldness
- Sun damage
- Loss of collagen
