Why deeper skin tones are more prone to dark patches
Melanin-rich skin has more active pigment-producing cells, and those cells react strongly to injury and heat. When skin is inflamed by a breakout, a wax, a strong peel, or too much sun, they can overproduce pigment and leave a flat dark mark behind. That mark is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and Fitzpatrick skin types IV through VI see it most often. So with any resurfacing treatment, the pigment risk in melanin-rich skin comes mostly from the inflammation it creates.
